Project Title : Vibro Compaction for Helios Terminal at Jurong Island

Technique : Vibro Compaction

The Project

A bulk petroleum storage and blending facility is being built at Meranti, Jurong Island, Singapore by Helios Terminal Corporation Pte Ltd. The proposed terminal consists of product storage tanks, pipe racks, bund walls, storage areas, manifold, pump station and other facilities. The site was interesting in that it is sitting on a narrow manmade peninsula of only 200 m width. About half of this area was previously reclaimed land while the other half was freshly reclaimed land. The thickness of reclaimed sand fill varied between 20m to 30m with intermediate silty layers at some locations. There were a total of 21 product storage tanks with diameters ranging from 10m to 54m and heights ranging from 15m to 20m.

Vibro Compaction was carried out by Keller on a design and build basis. In addition to the compaction for tank farms, Vibro Compaction was also done in areas to be used for pipe racks, manifold, pump stations and utilities.

A total of 60,000m2 of sand was compacted between January and April 2006 using a total of three rigs including one twin and one single Vibro Compaction rig.
