Project Title : Vibro Replacement for OTS Phase 6 Tank Terminal on Jurong Island

Technique : Vibro Replacement

The Project

Jurong Island is a man-made island formed by joining several smaller islands by land reclamation. Oiltanking Singapore’s Phase 6 Terminal development on Jurong Island involved the construction of 15 nos. product storage tanks ranging in size from 20m to 36m diameter. The 20m high steel tanks were placed on a granular bed. The geology of the site is interesting in that half the terminal (Tank Farm 16) sits on the old Mesamut Darat Island and the other half (Tank Farm 17) on primarily reclaimed sandfill, in the channel west of the former island.

The ground underlying Tank Farm 16 consists of 2-5m of reclaimed sandfill followed by medium to firm clay to between 8 to 12 m below ground level. For TF 16, consisting of 9 nos. tanks, Vibro Replacement using the Dry Method was performed. The VR stone columns were designed to limit settlements under the design tanks loads as well as to satisfy bearing capacity conerns.

A total of 15,500 linear meters of stone columns were installed using an Alpha-S Crane-hung system and a Keller Vibrocat.
